Giving Thanks for…

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

…scarecrows, pumpkins, pilgrim hats, bountiful harvests, turkey and cornucopias of fruit — but (hopefully) not having to wear them. We couldn’t resist throwing together this visual assault of Thanksgiving sweaters, but if you can get past it we also have some proper Covet Shop recommendations appropriate for a stylish holiday below.

Who knew "holiday sweater" season started in November?

Who knew "holiday sweater" season started in November?

Everyone has a crazy aunt, who will probably be wearing one of the above (that she hand-embroidered) on Thursday, which is all the more reason you should counter with a festive, family-appropriate —yet stylish —outfit to impress the fam. But picking the Thanksgiving outfit can be tricky, depending on the situation. Below, some suggestions if you’re…

1. Heading home to a small/conservative town. You may have chosen to move to a more urban center a while ago, but too much “city slicker” flair likely won’t be appreciated back on the farm. To avoid snide comments or ridicule about your “witch” (read: pointy) shoes, or “gloomy” look (read: anything black), it’s best to plan ahead and stylishly tone it down.

2. Meeting the in-laws, or your new boyfriend’s parents. Again, best to play it safe. Don’t overdo it with an overly flashy bag, and choose your outfit based on some key information from your SO. Preppy? Conservative? Upper-crust? Here, from left, we paired: A Milly halter with Frankie B. jeans and Sigerson Morrison studded flats (throw a black blazer or shrug over this); Abaete Burn Out Dot Dress with Marc Jacobs short pumps, and a Trina Turk blazer (and classic pant) with Marc Jacobs Suede Ribbon Pumps.

Hop Down to the (Pop.Up)

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

I had the chance to (finally) stop over to the Covet (Pop.Up) Shop yesterday to say hi to Nancy and check out the latest merch in person. That being said, it was the perfect weekend jaunt tobreak up your Saturday errands, or as a leisurely extension of your Sunday brunch lounging. Plus, you get the chance to a) actually try on/see/touch/feel what’s online; and b) get a sneak peek of some items that haven’t yet made it onto the site.

Not to mention, I walked away with two amazing fall scores, both seen below if you scroll down: The Love Moschino blazer (killer details) and plum Thread Social dress (hangs really well, both belted or no, fantastic color).

For those who love to troll the fleas, the Bowery Bazaar is small—thus easier to navigate than some of the city’s multiple flea-bazaar-outdoor-market-craft fair things cropping up (mostly downtown and in Brooklyn). This one’s still new, and will probably grow into its own, but worth a look…especially for jewelry-hunters. Spotted yesterday was a vendor selling necklaces and bracelets made with tiny GI Joe guns and recycled shotgun shells collected from shooting ranges, just right for paying a stylish tribute to veterans or your favorite serviceman/woman.

Covet Shopping for Baby Bumps

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Expectant mommies! For any of you awaiting spring babies, right about now you’re probably beginning to feel the wardrobe heat. While you may be able to still wear your “regular” jeans, buttoning them is definitely not an option and for many—you may be showing but not yet ready to divulge your secret. That being said, panic has likely set in as the same time as the realization that many of your clothes are now unwearable without you looking horribly clumpy.

But Covet Shop is here to help. Key to this in-between season are a few essential pieces:

1) The Blazer. Nothing hides a new baby bump better than a blazer. Wear it closed or open (pairing with a long scarf is another tip); either way deflects attention to what’s underneath.

2) The Dress. High waists and billowy structures are your friends at this stage. Avoid looking too potato-sacky by either wearing heels and a tailored jacket or crisp, cropped cardigan.

3) The Top. This piece is crucial, especially over those skinny jeans you’re holding up with a Belly Band. Look for long cuts or cinched styles.
