VMA Best Dressed!

Not only did Beyoncé announce her pregnancy last night at the VMA’s but she also looked stunning in a Lanvin sheath dress. Personally I think she deserves the best dressed award for the VMA red carpet.

Known for her laid back, boho style, Ashley Olsen was seen leaving her NYC apartment on August 11th in this casual yet chic outfit. Immediately, her fire engine, red Chanel slides caught my eye! She’s usually seen donning an oversized, grungy look during the day but the fashion mogul never ceases to WOW on the red carpet with her impeccable and fearless style. The difference in her daytime and nighttime style is like, well….day and night!

Fall 2011 Fur Frenzy

Without a doubt fur is a dominating presence on the Fall 2011 runway! Many of my favorite designers incorporated furry pieces into their collection. From jackets to stoles to headpieces and even shoes! Fur is everywhere!

However, as an animal lover and fashionista, is it wrong to love these unbelievably gorgeous pieces? If one of Gucci’s amazing, vibrant fur jackets fell into my possession, will I be able to actually wear it? Or will guilt take over?

We all know that celebrities don’t make all their millions from their primal talents. They use their fame to diversify their revenue stream by building a brand. From appearances and endorsements to fragrances and even their own clothing lines. Now, what does a celebrity who sings or acts know about designing and constructing a garment? They don’t and who cares, we buy it for the name anyways.

Jessica Simpson has one of the most successful fashion empires, expected to earn $1 billion this year! That’s what I call maximizing your brand potential!!

There are the few celebrity lines that succeed but most often they fail. Let’s face it, we can’t all be good at everything we do. The ones that have bombed miserably include Mandy Moore’s Mblem, Jennifer Lopez’s Sweetface and Jovovich Hawk by Milla Jovovich. I actually really liked Jovovich Hawk and I think they had a pretty good run until 2008.

Asian-American Fashion Designers

In recent years, we have seen a rise in Asian American Fashion Designers such as Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang (one of my favs), Jason Wu, Doo Ri Chung, Derek Lam, Peter Som, Thakoon and Richard Chai. This brings music to my ears as I love to see the success of my own kind (being Chinese-American myself). As quoted in a WSJ article, A Design Generation Rising, “To explain the sharp increase in their numbers, many young Asian-American designers point to a cultural shift within their communities that has liberated them from traditional career expectations.”
