LV Suhali Bag…As Seen On

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

I couldn’t believe when the Suhali bag landed in front of me! Now why would anyone give that up?! I don’t ask my clients questions like that, I just accept it graciously with a smile! The Suhali Le Fabuleux Bag is made from luxurious Suhali leather and complimented with metal studs and hardware, this bag is just A-mazing.

My favorite celebs love this bag as much as I do! It takes a departure from the beloved Monogram Canvas but remains classic and functional. The Suhali Le Fabuleux is not one that will easily be thrown in the back of a closet after one season of wear, it’s simple enough but perfectly adorned that you will choose this bag over and over again, day or night!

Red Carpet Ready

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

As all fashionistas are aware by now, the awards season is upon us and the count down to Oscar night is on! As I write this post, I am watching Live from the Red Carpet on the E! channel cover the SAG Awards. I must say I am much more impressed with the dresses at the Screen Actors Guild Awards than I was for the Golden Globes.

Fabulous Tulle Confection

Fabulous Tulle Confection

Nancy is particularly loving the beautiful confection of the dress Angie Harmon is wearing by Monique L’Huillier, as am I. I am also loving the Carolina Herrera black and gold lace gown that January Jones chose, which is quite the departure from the red hot Versace number she wore at the Globes. I also think that Nicole Kidman’s Nina Ricci gown is stunning. I love the lace back. Overall, I am impressed with several of the nominees and presenters choices.

Watching all of the beautiful dresses has inspired me to put together a few fabulous Red Carpet Ready looks from new pieces on Covet Shop that would make any girl stop traffic and a dead ringer for a Hollywood starlet….

My first ensemble would be…

Kate in a fabulous corset bustier with black gloves

My all time favorite mannequin, other than “the shrimp”, is without a doubt Kate Moss. I am sure many of you readers would agree with me…

It all started many, many years ago when I saw that first layout of Miss Moss for British Mag – The Face. She was clad in just some bloomers and a paper crown. No one photographs like Kate. Her face is just amazing and she knows, better than anyone, how to work it for the camera.

A few years ago she starred in a short film, by Mike Figgis, for a special collaboration with Agent Provocateur to promote their stunning under-pinings. I am super excited that Agent Provocateur is opening an uptown location on Madison very soon. I will be able to check out their exquisite lingerie more frequently…

The iconic images were released in a limited edition book, so I thought I would share some of them with my fashionable covet shop readers…

And God Created Woman…in St. Tropez

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

I hope you all had a good week and are as excited for the weekend as I am!! I am looking forward to some rest and relaxation after a long week which was complicated by the messy weather here in Manhattan. It is currently snowing as I write this post and apparently there is more snow on the way.  It is also supposed to drop 20 degrees tonight, which I know I am most definitely not looking forward to!! Brrrrr!

This frigid weather has me dreaming of the Summer and counting down the days until I can head to the beach again. Unfortunately, Summer is a long way off and there is a lot to be accomplished before then. Due to the fact that my job consumes most of my time and has a quite demanding schedule, I will not be jetting off to a balmy destination any time soon. Fashion Week in New York will soon be upon us, then Milan, then Paris etc. etc. so both Nancy and I will be very busy until around late March.

However, this does not mean I cannot fantasize about vacation, sun, surf and having to wear considerably less in the coming months. Thinking about the Summer and the sun has made me nostalgic for the Cote d’Azur’s St. Tropez, which always seems to conjure up images of one of my other favorite fashion icons, Brigitte Bardot.

I had the pleasure of visiting St.Tropez last July for work, for the Philipp Plein boutique opening, one of the other fabulous designers that I work with. Philipp Plein is a hugely talented and amazing designer who has a cult following across Europe and is a rising star in the United States. His lifestyle luxury brand caters to the international jet set crowd with boutiques in Monte Carlo, Cannes, Vienna, Moscow and Kitzbuhel, so naturally the St.Tropez boutique was the perfect addition to his ever growing fashion empire.

The weather was almost intolerable, it was so hot. I was informed by my friend Massimo that this was due to the Ghilbli Winds that blow up from the Sahara Desert, but even in the soaring temperatures, St. Tropez was still absolutely mesmerizing and magical.

The party for the opening was beautiful; there was a fashion show and French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s son, Pierre, was the DJ for the evening (he also happens to be the face of the new PP ad campaign for men). The after-party was held at the famed Cave du Roys nightclub and was the perfect end to the evening.

Anyhow, back to Brigitte Bardot! While we were in town, there was a huge exhibit of photos and artwork at a gallery on Brigitte as her name has become synonymous with St. Tropez…

The exhibit reminded me of what an iconic beauty she was and why I fell in love with her look and style in the first place.

Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot was born in 1934 and rose to fame as an international sex-symbol for the role she played in the movie “And God Created Woman,” directed by her then husband, Roger Vadim at the young age of 18; the movie also thrust the sleepy fishing village of St. Tropez into the international limelight and in turn put St. Tropez on the map. It also was the beginning of the public’s enduring fascination and association with Bardot and St. Tropez.

Brigitte grew up training to be a ballerina and later began modeling, which eventually turned into acting after she met her Vadim. During the 1956  filming of  “And God Created Woman” in St. Tropez, the cast and crew hung out and filmed on the beach Plage de Pampelonne, located in a somewhat remote and difficult place to get to at the time. There was a family, the Colmonts, that had a tiny restaurant “Cinquante Cinq” that they ran out of the small beach hut they lived in located at Plage de Pampelonne. Somehow, the Colmont family ended up catering for the cast and crew of the movie and the rest is history…

“Cinquante Cinq” or Club 55 is now one of St. Tropez’s most legendary hot spots. It is the place to be seen, especially during lunch. The restaurant and bar is filled with a posh international crowd, clamoring for tables, as getting a reservation can be quite tricky I have heard. The only way to get to this storied spot is via a long, narrow road or by yacht!

I never made it there, but one of my favorite boutique owners and buyers that I work with, has been several times and she said there is nothing like dining at Cinquante Cinq on the blue cloaked tables and the restaurants fine cuisine all under a starry sky by the sea.

Perhaps Brigitte was heading over to Cinquante Cinq on her Hinckley for lunch?

Perhaps Brigitte was heading over to Cinquante Cinq on her Hinckley for lunch?

Brigitte went on to make many more movies and marry several other men after she divorced Vardim, but she will always be remembered for her role in “And God Created Woman” and her love for St. Tropez.

A couple of years after the filming in 1958, she purchased her own home La Madrague, in St. Tropez, where I believe she still resides.

Her iconic style and fashion sense remains to this day.  When I think of Brigitte and St. Tropez I think of pedal pushers, hot pants, gingham, bustiers, capris, crop tops and fabulous little striped knit tops.

In fact the Blumarine Spring Summer 2011 pre-collection was inspired by Brigitte Bardot in St. Tropez on the French Rivera. The collection was full of amazing little pants, gingham dresses, knits and crop tops that Brigitte would most definitely have worn. In the showroom, we named the prints in the collection after cities of the French Rivera…

Although, she has become somewhat controversial in her later years for her various political statements and special interests, she will always be remembered as one of the foremost international sex symbols and fashion icons ever.

Say ‘I Do’ to Non Traditional Wedding Dresses

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Spring is in full bloom, and with it? Everywhere you turn, brides in classic bridal attire posing in the traditional picturesque spots (think: Boston Common, swans gliding in the background; the Brooklyn Bridge; Central Park; the Jefferson Memorial, avec cherry blossoms…you get  the picture). And don’t get me wrong – classic is absolutely lovely, but what about those brides looking for something slightly different?

Clockwise, from left: J. Mendel asymmetric dress; Deborah Milner plastic lace dress; my second wedding attire, from a vintage Vogue pattern

Are you an eco-concious bride? You could really push the limits with this one-of-a-kind dress by Deborah Milner, a gorgeous lace creation made completely from plastic bags (cover of ID magazine, above). If you just don’t care for traditional, period, are a little left of center, choose something like this J. Mendel asymmetric dress (found on Fabsugar). Or – speaking from experience – maybe it’s your second wedding, for which I’d suggest something less formal like the dress my mother made (here, bottom left) based on a vintage Vogue pattern and paired with turquoise metallic Jimmy Choo sandals.

Thankfully, for those creative types who want to stand out, Covet Shop has some new dresses just for you. If you’re a bride seeking a unique dress, check back often since we are posting new spring merchandise every week!

Of course, the wedding dress is only one piece of your bridal fashion puzzle: Don’t forget the rehearsal dinner, the engagement party (ies), the shower (s)…so, might we suggest the below party picks, perfect for (from left): The Hippie Wedding, the Downtown Affair, and last but not least, the Shotgun Wedding.

I’ll leave you with this: The Disco Ball sandal. Need I say more? Who can pull this one off for their nuptials? Whatever the occasion, whomever buys these babies definitely needs to send us a picture of them in action.

Behind-the-Scenes Downtime with Covet Shop

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Even Covet Shopettes need to be pampered sometimes. Last Wednesday, for St. Patrick’s Day, Nancy invited me to the lovely Maria Bonita Spa, located in New York’s Nolita, to celebrate the day “Brazilian Style.” Fernanda Lacerda, the owner/sultry Brazilian (of course), has purchased from Covet Shop before and befriended Nancy on Twitter.

At the event (where we were happily surprised to run into bloggers from Eye4Style, StyleITOnline, Miss Whoever You Are and Heather Park from M.A.C.) guests indulged in Caipirinhas while the spa gave us the royal pampering treatment consisting of: Envix Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment; the Perfect Blow-Out; and a Maria Bonita “Irish Manicure.” While Nancy got the full trio of services, I only had time for the mani, which was described as “Brazilian Style” by manicurist Rosalina.

My Butter LONDON 3 Free, in Thames, was the envy of the other bloggers...

Green with envy for my Butter LONDON 3 Free, in Thames

I’d never heard of a Brazilian manicure, and thankfully she described it before starting because – otherwise – I’d have mistakenly thought that she was purposefully botching the job (in a rather astounding way).

Rosalina explained that this technique involved a more intense cuticle push and trim on both the sides and bottom of the nail, then “overpainting” the sides and cleaning up at the end.  This allows the color to wrap around the whole nail and, she said, would last longer. I was impressed – not even one little chip until Saturday. They still look fairly presentable today, one week later, but definitely one of the best manicures I’ve had in a while.

Now…what to wear with this color…I’d say this just-in Badgley Mishka Bustier Dress, paired with a Gucci Horsebit Clutch to show off the nails.

Talking Handbags with My 98-year-old Grandma

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Times have changed! Below, some grandmotherly wisdom on bags and our suggestions for Covet Shop finds that Grandma would approve of.

What are the three items every woman should have in her pocketbook?

Oh my goodness. Well, your credit card, your driver’s license, and an address book. How about that?

What do you think about these oversized bags that are all the rage these days?

I haven’t seen any pictures of them, but I don’t think I’d like them. You’d have trouble finding your stuff!

Grandma might not approve, but we love this new Chloe Bucket Tote and Stella McCartney Appaloosa Tote

Grandma might not approve, but weloved this new Chloe Bucket Tote (sold since posting!) and Stella McCartney Appaloosa Tote

Where was your favorite place to buy purses?

Lord & Taylor. Or Woodie’s [Woodward and Lothrop]. Then Woodie’s became Hecht’s…but Lord & Taylor was the best. It had a smaller selection, but better quality.

How did people shop before credit cards?

A really long time ago, before I was a teenager, the department stores had a long and round thing that they put what they wrote out “Mrs. Jones bought such-and-such purse” on a piece of paper then put it in a metal canister, smaller than a can of soup. That would connect to some wires that sent it to an office. Then later they would have these pads with triple copies where they’d write down the order and send it who knows where. Then even later you’d have an ID card. The whole thing sounds a little sloppy.

How many purses do you own?

Not many now, but had about 15—most women had six or eight. You need different sizes, different leathers, different colors. The amount you had depended on whether you had to go to work every day because if so, you’d need a strong everyday ones, then more dressy versions.

How much do you think one should pay for a purse these days?

I don’t know, I suppose almost $50? I used to pay $20, prices have doubled or tripled don’t you think? I haven’t bought one in a while.

Is there a difference between a handbag, a purse and a pocketbook?

Hm, not that I know of. I don’t think the dictionary will tell you either. I don’t think so!

alskdjfdddddddddddddddddddddddddd sdddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

We're not sure about definitions either, but this new Marc Jacobs Stam bag and Multi-Pocket bag seem to qualify as a purse and a pocketbook

Back in the day, which brands were hot?

The ones I bought weren’t brand specific. Mine also may have been less expensive than the high-class ones. I had medium-priced ones.

Were purse shoppers motivated by brands way back when?

As long as it looked right with the season and your outfit, that is what matters. Back then people didn’t pay much attention. Now it is the thing to be seen with a designer bag, but back then it didn’t count.

We couldn't agree more with Grandma. Here's a fall outfit we thought she would like: Marc Jacobs Gold Bar sunglasses, Mulberry bag, Alaia Miniskirt, YSL Rive Gauche jacket

Stylishly Embracing Your Love Handles

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Speaking of September issues, this month’s issue of Glamour stirred up quite a bit of excitement with its photo of gorgeous “plus-size” model Lizzie Miller on page 194. (We put “plus-size” in quotes since Lizzie hardly looks large, and we all know even size 2s can have little paunches when bending over.)

Thanks to streams of positive comments from readers, the New York Post reported on Tuesday that the magazine would run a nude shoot of other curvy models in a future issue. Here at Covet Shop, we couldn’t agree more: Fashion is for women of every shape and size, but it takes a savvy shopper to find those pieces that accentuate your assets while cleverly disguising what you’d prefer not to show off in public. So ladies of all sizes, strut your style with these hand-picked items for size 8s and up:

Since we’re moving into fall, here’s a complete outfit to bridge the season with class: A 3.1 Phillip Lim black Bow Tie Top paired with this Robert Rodriguez pencil skirt – with Badgley Mischka Mary Janes.
