March Madness

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

It’s been haunting you all winter – your closet. So before the weather gets far too nice to be rummaging around in its dark recesses, best to clean it out now and while you’re at it, consign online and turn your project into hard, cold cash. You’ll need it for these spring necessities…

Irish lassies! Shop no further

Heading out Wednesday for a St. Patrick’s Day party? For those going to a classier affair than your basic frat house tavern, might I recommend the below. We absolutely cannot believe this fabulous Stella McCartney dress has not sold yet – I’d personally pair it with a super short, cropped leather jacket and some peep-toe booties like the ones I scored from Beacon’s Closet yesterday. If you need further inspiration, see how Lindsay Lohan styled it here.

Spring essentials: The trench

If you purchase nothing else this spring, grab a new trench. Of course trenches never go out of style, but we’ve seen them celebrated in unique ways lately. Vogue UK suggests belted with the buttons undone, while Gryphon has debuted this bell-sleeved version designed by mother-daughter team Judy and Jane Aldridge (of Sea of Shoes fame).

We’re of course suggesting this Covet Shop version, which brings a a bit of noir-ish, yet feminine, glamour to the staid classic.

Spring essentials: The new bag and sandals

Nothing puts a spring in your step more than a delicious new bag or some strappy sandals to go with your fresh new pedi. My picks this week…

Spring essentials: The light sweater

Toss either of these gray sweaters in your oversized bag for when it gets chilly people-watching at your favorite sidewalk cafe, and try belting them with any of these smokin’ new belts (from Miu Miu, YSL, and Gucci) posted this week.

Covet Shoposcope – Pisces

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Happy Birthday, Pisces! To celebrate your unique combination of creativity, natural style, dreaminess and escapism (and, on the flip side — your over-emotional nature, sneakiness and penchant for hedonism), we’ve put together some fish-worthy Covet Shop picks for you this month.  But first, our round-up of stylish celebrity Pisces — who are naturally drawn to careers in the arts. We couldn’t resist including a brooding Benecio Del Toro, this Richard Avedon shot of Elizabeth Taylor, or my girl crush…Juliette Binoche.

Vintage Chanel

Pisces are typically found enjoying the finer things in life, such as strolling Via Montenapoleone or attending an exclusive museum fundraiser. What to wear? This Chanel pant suit, of course.

Water Sign Frocks, and Nails to Match

Since I only discovered new BFFs, Ginger + Liz during Fashion Week at the Robert Verdi Luxe Laboratory Suite, I hadn’t included them in my nail polish round up last week. So in honor of these two gorgeous ladies and their polish collection (which is free of toluene, formaldehyde or DBP), here are two of their smokin’ shades paired with some new Covet Shop outfits.

Last But Not Least – Shoes

Because Pisces must always maintain an air of mystery and left-of-center edge, let’s not forget important details such as shoes. God forbid a Pisces should ever have to wear dreary loafers or simple pumps, so we’ve put together these selections for the more boho Pisces – perfect for spending the workday lounging around at your friend’s studio drinking sangria, or sneaking off for an illicit tryst.

New Year’s Musings

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Happy New Year, Covet Shoppers. Sorry to be MIA, but we’re just getting back in the swing after all the holiday madness and then picking up that nasty cold bug that’s been aggressively creeping around NYC.

I’m Dreaming…

…of winter white. Love this, each season. How to wear it?  It’s definitely not for certain skin tones, and I personally would go for something rich and creamy as opposed to white-white, but pure white can work too. For inspiration, we served up some looks and pics of the latest celebs wearing this trend for inspiration, gathered up from a variety of fashion pundits online.

Nicole’s Winter Covet Shop Picks

Since, clearly, I can’t get enough of black and white, two outfits to choose from…and be sure to check in with What’s New on Covet Shop: Items like this Burberry trench and Alexander Wang Tropical Wool vest won’t last long. Especially since we were recently featured on one of our favorite sites, SheFinds! Thanks to the editors there for thinking of us and helping spread the Covet Shop love.

Baby, it’s Cold Outside

Last, it’s been absolutely freezing here in New York yet this week I’ve seen lots of women scurrying around town with bare legs during work hours. Ladies, why? Literally, just the other [extremely windy] day I stood next to a shivering, bare-legged damsel on Broadway and Spring who – when the light turned – ran as fast as she could, curled over and click-clacking down the sidewalk, to her office. Is it just me or aren’t tights in? I can see forgoing stockings of any sort if you’re going to an evening event and wearing a gown, but for work?!?

‘Tis the Season…to Stretch your Holiday Style Budget

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Shopping for Christmas or any other December event? You’re running out of time…and if you’re also low on cash, Covet Shop is offering free shipping on orders over $300. Here, we’ve selected some fabulous items — many of which have been further reduced from Covet Shop everyday great prices.

Bags, bags, bags. Here’s a tip for you Wise Men out there stumped for gift ideas: I can’t think of any woman who wouldn’t love to receive a hot new handbag, no matter the occasion. That you saved a bundle on it can be our little secret.

Somehow, these reminded me of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. From top: Cartier La Dona Satchel; Marc Jacobs Stam bag (reduced to $475); Balenciaga Cherche Midi clutch (reduced to $495)

A gift…for you. Sometimes holiday entertaining makes us just want to escape south to Florida or the islands. For such pursuits, you deserve a new dress and sunglasses after all that cooking and baking.

Virtual Vintage

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Maybe it’s because of the current craze overMad Men, but vintage shopping seems to have increased in popularity of late. Celebrities have always been big fans of wearing vintage gowns to red-carpet events (who can forget that Angie wore a $26 dress, snatched up at LA’s Wasteland, to the 2007 “Mighty Heart” premiere), but they are also known for prowling flea markets for unique finds.

But don’t take it from us: Style icons such as Kate Moss and Zooey Deschanel know how to do it right. The trick? Cleverly mixing vintage to create looks that are modern and uniquely yours. And don’t forget – if you’re very creative, like Kate was when her Vintage Dior accidentally ripped at a 2007 V&A event, you can always alter your vintage finds to make them even more personal.

As an extra bonus, there’s no easier way to go green than by buying used or vintage clothing.

It’s a pretty simple concept: By recycling fashion, demand goes up for the vintage/resale market, which can help reduce global impact of clothing manufacturing. Another effect is purely inspirational. As other designers take note of consumers’ appetite for used clothing, they may be encouraged to use recycled materials in their new lines. Below, some of our favorite Covet Shop online vintage designer finds.

Extra $20 in your fashion budget? Invest in lipstick.

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

During the Anna Wintour interview on Monday’s Late Night with David Letterman, Dave wondered aloud: Let’s say I have a $20 fashion budget, what should I buy? Anna’s response [with a smirk]? “Well, you could buy a lipstick.” We agree. Because buying a shiny new lipstick is not only fun, but the essential punctuation mark for your new Covet Shop outfit.

Plus, with these Covet Shop steals, you’ll have extra cash to splurge on the little luxuries. And with your new fabulous outfit, it simply wouldn’t be right to be seen touching up with some cheap drugstore brand you had to tear out of a clamshell package.

Below, we’ve paired some items with the appropriate lip choices. Kiss kiss.

With tough-girl chic on the runway in the form of over-the-knee-boots, leather shorts and lots of studs, avoid looking too “Woman of the Night” by toning down this edgy look with a rose or peach lip stain or tint. We recommend Napoleon Perdis’ Luminous Lip Veil ($16), Korres Lip Butter ($9), or Aveda’s great-smelling Lip Tint ($14). Get the look with these hot Maison Martin Margiela Slash Ankle Boots, or Bowy Booties from Marc Jacobs.

A demure day-to-night Milly, shown here, is tr? Marion Cotillard, and the best pairing for this lovely ensemble is this season’s sizzliest shade—red. To keep things oh-so-chic, pick the best red shade for your skin tone/personality from the collections of French brands: YSL’s Rouge Volupt?($34), Chanel’s Rouge Allure ($30), or Rouge G from Guerlain ($45). Tip: Apply with your fingertip to steer clear of the dreaded “clown mouth.”

From the Fall 09 runways, dark—sometimes glossy—lips were the rage and look fantastic with taupes, shimmery beiges, or golds. That’s why we think M.A.C lipstick in Cyber ($14) and Nars’ Fast Ride, in Tamango ($24), are perfect for this gorgeous Missoni Zig Zag Tie Dress.

The elegant jewel-toned DVF just screams “gold accessory,” so reach for a rose or pink shade of the very refined Est? Lauder Hydra Lustre Signature lipstick ($19.50). Or, might we suggest the always classy, ever creamy, Bobbi Brown Lip Color ($22) in Rose Berry (with or without a coat of high-shine Lip Gloss, $20).
